Parent Visas

Parent visas let the parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents and eligible New Zealand citizens join their children in Australia. Contributory options cost more but are processed much faster.

Who this is for

  • Parents of settled Australian citizens, permanent residents or eligible NZ citizens
  • Aged parents (old enough to receive the Australian age pension)
  • Families wanting longer temporary stays for parents

Visa options

Subclass 143 / 173

Contributory Parent

Permanent (143) or two-year temporary (173) visa with a higher charge and shorter wait.

Subclass 864 / 884

Contributory Aged Parent

As above, for aged parents applying in Australia.

Subclass 103 / 804

Parent and Aged Parent

Non-contributory permanent visas. Lower cost but very long waiting times.

Subclass 870

Sponsored Parent (Temporary)

Stay up to 3 or 5 years at a time. Needs an approved sponsor.

Key requirements

  • Meet the balance of family test (permanent parent visas)
  • Sponsorship by a settled child (or other eligible sponsor)
  • An Assurance of Support (contributory and some other parent visas)
  • Health and character requirements

Good to know: Parent visa queues are long and fees are significant. A clear strategy from the start can save years.

How we can help

  • Check the balance of family test
  • Compare contributory and non-contributory pathways
  • Prepare sponsorship and Assurance of Support
